So, I've been a First Mentor (First Robotics) for the kid's robotics team for about two years now. I train and assist with photography, videography, logo redesign and print collateral. This year's game was called the Recycle Rush and it was held at the Chaifetz arena. It's so refreshing to see other embracing their nerdiness (made up word) and letting that flag fly. In this blog I will attach images (many of which were taken by my daughter) and other items I helped with this season. I still have loads of footage to develope into a keepsake for the graduating seniors.
Firstly, logo redesign...
The team captain approached me last year about revamping the logo a bit. The original design was awesome and created by a former student, but they wanted one with a more realistic lion.
I liked the concept and kept a lot the original ideas for the revision (shown below)
The team loved it and from this design we had tshirts, bowling shirts, buttons and a flag made.
Now on to the Nerdy stuff... Fonts could make or break a design. I love fonts. When I'm out and about I pay attention to signs, banners, posters to see if I recognize the font, etc. You'd be surprised how many businesses use variations of the same font, but then again, it does make sense as a strong font will stand out in someone's mind. The font I'm loving this month is Oslo Sleek. It's clean and light, it fills space without being clunky. It was created by Antonio Rodrigues Jr. I could see this font on flyers, posters, restaurant menus, packaging and more.
Online magazine design and updating is just as time consuming as print publications. I found this out while working on The Arts Today Ezine which started out with just two pages and on the most recent release (vol 1.10) there is over 130 pages. This publication features art related events or subjects in and around Missouri. This magazine is convenient as it can be accessed online via computer or mobile phone for those that are one-the-go. And it is complete with click through links to advertiser's/contributor's webpages.
